Happy Saturday!

Thank you for your work this week. It was indeed a busy one but much better overall. I want to reiterate the direction we are heading in for the next 6 weeks. As a building, we will focus more on ensuring that we are teaching the standards, monitoring the data, and adjusting instruction for reteaching in an effort to help students master the standards. I.C.E. (Introduce/Cite/Explain) is the instructional strategy that should be used across contents in every grade level. Posters should be visible in your classrooms. As we are observing informally and formally, be sure that you are explicitly using this strategy and your students have a clear understanding of its purpose for your class. If there is a need for a PL refresher, please see our IC.

As a reminder, students need to be supervised at all times. It is imperative that as adults we remain consistent with our practices. Do NOT release students the first and last fifteen minutes of class unless it is an emergency. Otherwise students should remain in class. This does not mean to begin releasing students when the time is permissible. We have had a lot of unnecessary movement in the halls. This results in an increase of inappropriate behaviors. In a like manner, remain vigilant in your classrooms. Take some time to talk to your students, hear what is happening around you so that you know what is going on. It is eye-opening to hear what is really going on when your back is turned whether it is positive or negative. This is a long way to say, focus on your relationships with your students.

Just a reminder to remain professional at all times. I read a story that reminded me of the importance of water! A bottle of water despite the turmoil it may endure remains constant. It does not explode if it is shaken or dropped. However a carbonated drink if dropped or shaken, EXPLODES! WE can not become carbonated drinks but we can be a bottle of water, CONSTANT and CALM! Besides, water is good for the soul! Pour your water into each other and into our students. Here is to a great week at Hilsman!

Principal Tolbert (lol)

From Your IC:
All content teachers have USA TestPrep accounts set up at this time. Connections, you're next! Please share this presentation with students on Monday throughout your content classes to ensure they are all set up and ready to go.  Let Hogan know via email if students are unable to login.

GREAT NEWS! Monday, February 19th has been designated a true teacher work day by the superintendent! This means you can collaboratively plan, assess student work, put in grades, clean off your desk, freshen up your classrooms, etc. without us bugging you!!!! YAY!

From AP Forker:Thank you, teachers, for your dedication to our students.  We have the best teachers at Hilsman!
During transitions, please be sure that you are present at your posts actively encouraging students to adhere to expected behaviors.

Also, please remind students that string bags are not to be worn throughout the building.  If a student does not adhere to your expectations, please request support from your team leader or an administrator.

Mr. Forker has begun putting pink copies of referrals in team leaders boxes after the referral has been processed. This will provide you with details about the consequences issued for infractions and discipline issues.   If you have any questions, please let Mr. Forker know.

Lastly, our largest disciplinary issue at Hilsman is student incivility. This includes disrespect, use of profanity, and insubordination. As you engage with your students, please be sure to explicitly teach expectations for communicating and interacting. As indicated in Standard 10 of our Common Commitments, we must continuously work to forge relationships and connections with our students.

From Ms. Hughes:
Earth Day T-Shirt orders are due on February 15.

From Ms. Marty:
IB Academies start Monday. We will work on a morning activity schedule. Students will have passes identifying their academy that you will give out at the end of ELT on Monday. Teachers will have rosters by Monday. There is no option for students to change, so ensure they get to where they need to go. Please do not send them to discuss changes. Admin will be in the hallway making sure students get to where they need to be. There will be signs specifying the traffic pattern. We will call 6th grade first, 8th grade second, and 7th grade third. Please be in the hallway to help direct traffic and ensure safety. Students will take all of their belongings with them as we will transition to 3rd period from IB Academies.

Week of February 5th

No automatic alt text available.

Happy Friday!

Cheers to another week at Hilsman! Thank you for your work the last two weeks. WE have surely earned every penny of our salary. Although some students are acting out, most of our students are engaged in the classrooms. After being able to perform a few observations today, it is evident that most of you are continuing the great work of educating our students.

As we continue to perform observations and monitor instruction I want to encourage you to think about your instructional gaps as we will have a discussion around this next week during collaborative plannings. Be prepared to discuss your most effective tier 1 strategies, how they are implemented, monitored, and adjusted to teach your students.

It is my hope that the jean days got you through the week! Have a terrific weekend and I will see you all on Monday!

Tolbert

Week of January 29th

Faculty and Staff,

Wowsers! What a week at the Hil! Let me begin by simply saying Thank You for your commitment to the work that we do at Hilsman. Saving our children can be a daunting task, but with the work that you do everyday, I continue to believe that we can and will make a difference. As a matter of fact, we are making a difference. It is evident everyday! I encourage to stay encouraged! YOU matter and the WORK that YOU do MATTERS.

Tomorrow we will return to do the work that has been set out for us! Continue to follow our expectations as we meet the goals specified in our SIP. Please be prepared to meet with me during your plannings tomorrow to share your 45 Day Action Plans. Be sure that you can show how what your team is doing has been monitored as well as how it has helped our students to improve.

Just a sweet reminder about remaining professional! It can be hard to turn to the other cheek with parents and students. Please be reminded that we are the example for our community. Please continue to remain professional when speaking to our students and parents. Additionally, it is important that we come to work every day on time. Emergencies will occur and I definitely will continue to work with everyone. However, keep in mind that we have to be present to make a difference! Being present means being at Hilsman physically and emotionally. We all need to stay the course! Again, thank you!

Principal Tolbert

Panther Family:

Tech Initiative- We unanimously decided to deliver instruction using digital technology in a different way for the remainder of the school year. As a result, students will no longer be allowed to take their personal learning devices home. This will call for you to make some adjustments to your instructional delivery. Devices are still available for students through the presence of a computer cart stored in your classroom.  Mr. Forker designed an inventory sheet to help assist you with ensuring devices are accounted for and safe. Please remember to keep your cart or classroom locked at all times.

Instruction should be designed to engage students from bell to bell. A variety of instructional strategies should be used to help meet the needs of all of your students. As always, students should be actively involved in their learning. Please encourage them to have meaningful conversations with each other to enhance their ability to verbally communicate. It is my belief that by limiting the distractions caused by technology and encouraging face to face communication, students will prevail academically.

It has been clearly communicated and recognized that you will need additional supplies and time as we transition to a more blended model of teaching. I have committed to doing the following:

  • Increasing copies from 500 to 1000 a month
  • Providing every teacher with a box of paper
  • Providing contents with time to macro-plan
  • Ordering basic school supplies based on the list provided by Mr. Forker for student
  • Offering supplemental material to help support struggling learners
  • Increase teacher feedback in a timely manner
ELT
Each grade level will redesign ELT based on the 4 content areas in an effort to prepare all of our students for the Milestones. As a grade level, you have been given the charge of using the most recent data (RI, MI, CFA, grades) to place your students in the most appropriate ELT. Every student will receive enrichment/remediation in every content area by alternating ELTs every 4 weeks for the remainder of the year. Students that are in a direct or intervention setting will remain in that ELT with no change.

Evaluations
Please ensure that you are consistently delivering high quality instruction to our students. Mr. Forker and I will continue to conduct evaluations for the next several weeks. Remember that if you do not agree with a rating that you can add comments and evidence in the platform. If you have any questions or concerns, please see one of the administrators.

Professionalism
This is a reminder that YOU are the MOST important factor in your students' education. I want to stress the importance of you being at work. When you miss school, our students miss out! We need you to be present and on time every day in order to make a difference in the lives of our students. If you must be absent, please use AESOP to report your absence. Please refrain from reporting absences late in the morning as it is extremely difficult to find a substitute at the last minute. If you are going to be out for an extended period of time, please take a moment to speak with Ms. Tolbert as well as secure a substitute.  I also request that you review the handbook and the information provided by our HR Department regarding attendance.
