Week of March 26

Staff,

What an amazing but busy week! Thank you to all of the teacher leaders that took on the job of leading in the absence of your administrators. The building was standing tall when I arrived to work Friday and the halls were clear of students. YOU ALL did an EXCEPTIONAL job! I realize that their work had a lot of help from their SUPPORTIVE, TALENTED, and AMAZING co-workers. Everyone adapted to the many absences this week with ease. From the bottom of my heart, Thank you to EVERYONE! I recognize all of your hard work!

This week we willbe hosting conferences. Mrs. Moore shared the advisement lesson that will help you prepare our students to take the lead with their conference. Please be sure to share it! We received a lot of praise from the parents during Fall conferences. They really liked having students share their glows and grows. This is also a reminder that you should contact the parent(s) of the students whose conferences you are responsible for hosting. In addition, I am sending a phone reminder to remind parents about the importance of attending the conferences.

If a child failed your class, you are required to participate in that student's conference. Connection teachers, you will need to participate in 15 conferences. Our late night is Wednesday, March 28th. All teachers will need to remain at HMS until 7:45 pm. The remainder of the week you are required to to stay until 4:00. I highly encourage you to finish your conferences before 2:00 Friday.

Every grade level will need to prepare a list of students that are at risk of failing for the year. Summer School is being offered and we want to guarantee them a seat! I would also like to participate in those conferences to inform parents as well as to offer information

We should be professionally dressed this week. NO JEANS.

Contracts were due last Friday! Please make sure that all contracts are submitted to me no later than Tuesday by noon! Remember that if you do not plan to return, I will need a letter of resignation to submit to HR.

I have reached out to some of you to serve with me at the CCSD Job Fair that will be held on March 31st from 8:00 am-12:00 pm. If there are others that would like to help screen applicants for Hilsman, please respond to me via email! I would love to have you present as we work to capture some of the best candidates for Hilsman.

Lastly, I know that we all have a lot going on. I also realize that "things" happen that causes us to have be out. Please be sure that we make it to the end of the race! We can not expect our students to be successful if we are not present at work. YOU are the most important piece of the race that the students are running! When you miss school, they miss out, and then they flunk out! Please make every effort to be at work until the end of the year. Personal time will not be granted this week, during the time of testing, or the last week of school . It is critical that you are present and on time! Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter. We are almost to the end. Hang in there!

Tolbert

-Copies for all parents explaining the IB report card are in a stack in front of the boxes. Please only grab enough for the students you are conferencing with.

Parent Conference Sheets for gifted and advanced content
-We have placed a few sheets in your boxes with general information on gifted, advanced content, accelerated, and high school classes. Give one to any parent that is interested. If you need more copies, just let Ms. Marty or Mrs. Giannasi know.
-We also gave some of you sheets with the gifted continuation criteria to hand to parents of gifted students.

The next IB Academy is scheduled for April 23rd. We will be on a morning activity schedule. Please check your rosters. Some students are not reporting to their academy. The front office needs to know where to find the students. Please take pictures and send them to Ms. Maxey for the yearbook and IB bulletin board.

We are currently scheduling the high school End of Course Tests. More information will be provided once we have the schedule.

From Hogan:
On your radar: The Math Inventory and the Reading Inventory window opens for middle schools the week of April 2nd.

From Ms. Hubbard:
Spring Picture Day is Wednesday, April 4th. Order forms will be placed in mailboxes by Monday to distribute to your homerooms. Spring Pictures are prepay only. Parents can pay by cash, check, or credit card online. If paying by cash or check, students will need to take their payment along with the order form to the Lifetouch photographer on picture day. If their parent paid online, they will need to bring their order form completed by their parent indicating they have paid with a credit card online.

Pictures will be taken in the Old Gym ONLY for students whose parents prepaid online OR have cash or check in the envelope to turn in to the photographer.  Students who are taking pictures may be out of uniform as long as their attire adheres to the CCSD/Hilsman dress code. (Still waiting on confirmation from Ms. Tolbert on this, but in years past, students taking pictures in the spring have been allowed to be out of uniform on this day.)

From Ms. Gonzalez:
Our Hilsman Scholastic Spring Book Fair is all week Monday through Friday during school and parent conference hours in our media center! Week of March 19th

Good Evening!

We are back at it tomorrow! I hope that Spring Break was good to you and that you got an opportunity to rest! We are in our 4th quarter and on the last leg of the race! It is important that we finish strong and that we do not give up! I know that we have endured many changes but please be patient. We can not FAIL! We can not FAIL because others are depending on us to make a difference! The OTHERS are our STUDENTS! Finish the drill!

I have received many request for personal leave. I will not grant any personal leave during Parent/Teacher Conferences, testing, and the last week of school. These are critical times at the school and everyone will need to be present.

I received contracts last Friday! Please see me Tuesday if you did not receive your contract as they are due back soon.

ELTs will NOT shift until next Monday. This is to allow you more time to post grades. Remember that ELT grades should be an average of both 4 weeks. Please work with each other to ensure that the grades are posted and ELT placements are correct. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Brinkley.

Parent Teacher Conferences are next week. Please make sure that students are prepared to present to their parents. Also, you will need to make contact with every parent of the students whose conferences you are responsible for hosting. This will need to be recorded in Campus in the PLP section. If parents are in need of transportation, please inform Mrs. Griffith ASAP.

Lastly, thank you for your commitment to the work! There is much to be done but a lot that have been mastered. Our six week review is coming soon. I am looking forward to positive comments about the work that we have been doing.

Here is to a great week!

Tolbert

Week of March 5th

Teacher Inspiration
Good evening!

I hope all of you were able to enjoy your weekend. The weather was beautiful and it was just what we needed after a long week of work. Tomorrow we are back at it! Let us all arrive with a cheerful heart and mind, prepared to teach our scholars. Yes, it is the week before Spring Break so be prepared for some anxious middle schoolers. Remember what you have been reminded of the last two weeks in your PL with Mr. Forker. R-E-S-P-E-C-T is the one thing that will go a long way as we are pushing forward to the end of the year. This week I challenge us to respect each other, the students, and our parents.

This week will be filled with activities and meetings. Tuesday, we will have visitors in our math classes observing your instructional practices. ICE is the instructional strategy that we have all agreed to practice in an effort to increase student achievement. Therefore we are expecting to see it during your instructional delivery. You have done a great job of teaching ICE to students. They are able to articulate what it means and understands how to use it as they are preparing a response.

Take a deep breath, let it go, and prepare your mind for a great week at Hilsman! 5 days to Spring Break! We can do it! Thank you for all that you do! See you tomorrow!

Tolbert

From Ms. Marty:
Teachers, ensure that you have entered 4 IB grades by Friday, March 9th. As of now, please follow the instructions below to enter future IB grades. Please take notice of #5. Do not worry about any past IB grades.  Connections teachers, we will look at the best fit grades in April together.
Advisement on Monday will be over the purpose of IB report cards. Students will need to understand these in order to explain their report cards at parent conferences. There will be a letter with resources for further information handed out at conferences.
Our next housing ceremony will be on Friday, March 9th. The theme will be respect and will involve student recognition, staff recognition, trivia, and presentations from students. If you would like to recognize students or staff members, please send them to Ms. Marty by Tuesday, March 6th.  Please make an effort to participate in the ceremony. Consider changing your house bulletin boards to encourage participation and healthy competition.  Here is what House Iron is using for their board.

As you plan for your next lessons and units, consider using some of these differentiation strategies. Your instructional staff will be happy to come co teach or model the strategies. Make sure to read the one concerning SEL!
